Old fundo, or weights, are said to imitate the contours of a cocoon, being rounded and beautifully shaped with two hollowed sides. The unique design motif is normally used for clothing material.

Origin of Design

As the fundo was used to weigh gold and silver, it symbolizes wealth. The motif has been used for family crests and similar applications. Fundo-watsunagi is a pattern where weights are linked with wa, or hoops, the pronunciation of which is the same as the word for peace in Japanese.
