Since its founding in 706, Izaji Temple has preserved a history spanning more than 1,300 years. Tanihata is deeply honored to have contributed kumiko craftsmanship to the interior of this historic temple.

Eight sliding doors were fitted with our Fine Art Kumiko “Pattern Combination type design. Characterized by its diagonal lattice composition, this pattern offers a fresh, flowing expression while remaining rooted in the traditions of Japanese kumiko craftsmanship.

As Izaji Temple plants cherry trees each year as part of its ongoing tradition, we incorporated subtle sakura  motifs into the kumiko design to reflect this meaningful practice. The cherry trees, nurtured over generations, and the temple’s enduring history both symbolize the passage of time. Our hope was to create kumiko that quietly accompanies and celebrates these lasting traditions.

We are sincerely honored to have helped create a space where the warmth of natural wood and the delicate beauty of kumiko harmonize with the timeless character of traditional Japanese architecture.
